THE DECOR IN THIS ROOM HAS BEEN SOLD. CONTACT ME for ideas to create your own or discuss commissions.

In the summer of 2019, we decided to remodel our whole house. I started with Ellery’s bedroom. She and I are both huge Harry Potter fan(atic)s. We are both in Ravenclaw House and naturally we tried to keep that in mind as we planned our design. I spent the whole summer working on these rooms. I finally took a photos and videos (though I still have a couple of things to finish). Since I make things out of found objects, I’m adding a descriptions for a few of the more interesting items.

Here goes: The wall sconces are from a box of free stuff at a yard sale. I bought the door poster from Amazon and adhered it to foam core. I found a solid brass eagle door knocker on FB Marketplace. You can't have a Ravenclaw Common Room without a brass eagle door knocker!

The ceiling is a star field fabric backdrop I bought from Amazon. I used fabric starch to adhere it to the ceiling and added wood molding to make it look like a window, then painted the ceiling fan to match.

The curio shelf is full of little things that Ellery has collected over the years. She made the little wood puzzle niffler herself. The envelopes in the back are from the 2011 Harry Potter Celebration at Universal Studios. I made the Hand of Glory out of a plastic skeleton hand leftover from Halloween. I decoupaged tissue paper onto it like creepy skin. I still need to find a plaque for it. We won the crate of Quidditch balls in a HP raffle at our local bakery shop. I gutted the antique Victrola case (it was free from a guy on FBM) and refinished it for art supplies storage. The basket on top (Goodwill) is full of Honeydukes treat boxes I saved from our many trips to WWofHP in Florida. This is not all of them...it's all I could fit into the basket! The ‘bookcase’ walls are also starched photo backdrops from Amazon. The metal leaves decor above the books are old Home Interior wall decor pieces from a yard sale. I picked up the slipper chair on FBM for a real bargain and reupholstered it. The side table was another FBM bargain because it was missing the glass, so I had a new piece cut and it was easy to refinish. The desk and chair were both in bad shape, so I refinished those too. The desk style is unique, the desktop slides back and the top folds down to look like a chest of drawers. I handpainted the desktop like the night sky at Ellery's request. I picked up the white column at a yard sale because it was perfect for a small statue of Rowena Ravenclaw with her lost diadem. She is made of paper mache over a cardboard and an armature of clothes hangers. She took FOREVER to finish. I think she looks a bit masculine but I'm not a sculptor, so that's the best I could do.

The window treatment was a long process, too. The cornice is a cardboard box covered in scrap fabric. The gold filigree is pieces cut from an ugly medieval wall decor thing I found at a yard sale. I cut it up, sanded the edges, sprayed the pieces and glued them on the cornice. I made the actual curtains from scratch, with fabrics and trims I had in my fabric stash. The nightstand is from a yard sale, the lady asked me what I was going to do with it and I told her it was for my daughter's HP room, she insisted on giving it to me for free. I didn’t argue.

The bed is another story entirely. I couldn't find a bed I liked that looked "grand" enough but was also affordable. So, I ended up using two beds. I found one inexpensive white poster bed on FBM (with little pink lambs painted on it). The other bed I picked up on the side of the road, broken and in pieces. Using Bondo and a little magic, I put both beds together to make the posters super tall and I added the wood appliques, then painted and distressed the whole thing. The blue swags were leftovers from another project and I had the giant tassels in my fabric stash. The chandelier was on FBM for more than I wanted to pay, then the lady told me the lights didn't work and gave it to me for less than half price. But I had to drive a loooooong way to pick it up, the things I'll do for a bargain... Ellery made the felt candles herself. The suitcases under the bed have paper stickers I made to represent places in Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley. The plaque above the headboard is a yard sale find made of resin. I ground it down with a dremel tool to remove the hideous rebel flags, repainted it and decoupaged the Hogwarts and Ravenclaw crests on them. The Ravenclaw banner above the bed took a long time to make. I made the design myself. It is made from old blue jean fabric with felt and metallic trim from my craft stash. I hand embroidered the whole thing, even the gold edging around the letters.

The organ top took the longest besides the bed. I cut up five chairs, two spindled headboards, one footboard, one stool and two mirrors to make the blasted thing. I hand cut the stencil for the background detail, reworked a metal plate rack to make the music stand and used the dremel tool to make the candlesticks fit. The most special part is the gold lettering (which I DID NOT paint myself) I designed the lettering to scale and had an eBay seller cut it out of vinyl for me. Muggles, of course, would not notice that the name 'Filius and Sons' is a direct reference to Prof. Filius Flitwick...Head of Ravenclaw House...details make me happy.

The portrait walls were a lengthy project too. I collected the frames from yard sales, FBM and thrift stores. I found portraits on the Internet to fit each frame and had them printed. Then, I began the arduous process of arranging and hanging them all. Whomever has to paint this room in the future will need a gallon of spackle to cover all of those many, many holes (that will probably be me).

I need to finish the closet curtain. I've been dragging my feet because I have tons of costumes in there that I need to sell and want to take those out before I make an elaborate curtain. I will make a skirt for the piano stand to match.

The bathroom was difficult to video because of the big mirror and different lighting. The room is painted dark navy blue and bright white. I paid a few dollars for a big handful of peacock feathers on FBM and hung them on the door. I had been gathering bottles, jars and embellishments for years while we planned our house remodel. I designed and created all of the potion labels. The bottles and jars are filled with odd things like hair gel with glitter, floral jellies, rice that I dyed and painted, dyed rock salt, shredded silk flowers, an assortment of beads, plastic jewels and sequins, candle wax, bath salts, hand sanitizer with glitter, silver lace, etc. I made the cornice from cardboard and scrap fabric. The navy curtain is hard to see properly in the daytime, it's sheer navy tulle with silver sequins, so pretty. The candle holder in the corner is what we call 'the weapon' because it's made of either pure lead or solid wrought iron, I can barely lift the thing. The decanter next to it is not glass, it's lead crystal...a lady at a yard sale gave it to me because it was a gift from her ex-husband. I patiently listened to her whole angry story. She thought it was glass and worthless, I didn't correct her ;)  I painted the ornate white frame and re-designed the Mulpepper's Apothecary logo to suit the color scheme.

Lastly, there are only a few items in these rooms that I bought brand new (besides paint, glue, etc) Those are: the fabric backdrops, the door poster, the organ lettering, portait copies, the table glass and the navy curtain in the bathroom. Everything else was either free, from a thrift store or FBM or from my sewing room/attic. Or the Room of Requirement…

Enjoy!
